"Training for Egyptian Beekeepers on IPM for Honey Bee Pests & Diseases”

Honey bee experts from Egypt’s Agricultural Research Center (ARC) from Cairo and Tanta organized a one-day seminar for a dozen of beekeepers in the village of Hessa Shabshir, in the Delta governorate of Gharbeya. The event, which took place on August 15^th, was organized by ARC as part of the EU PRIMA project “PLANT-B”, which seeks to improve the compatibility and sustainability of the honeybee, medicinal/aromatic plants and citrus mixed-farming system in 6 Mediterranean countries, including Egypt.

The Egyptian Agricultural Research Center, as one of PLANT-B’s key partners, is responsible for disseminating best integrated pest management practices to local beekeepers, while developing innovative practices and tools meant to improve the well-being of beekeepers and honeybees.

The event featured a series of presentations by ARC bee experts, followed by a field training in a nearby apiary, and the visit of a honey packing factory. The day was kicked-off by Dr. Souad A. Shairra, a Professor of Biological Control at ARC’s Plant Protection Research Institute and PLANT-B’s focal point in Egypt. She briefly introduced each of the speakers, and thanked Dr. Mohamed Soliman, the director of ARC, for attending this important event.

The first hour of the training featured a series of presentations on better integrated pest management practices, plant-based methods to deal with Varroa [a mite that has been decimating bee hives worldwide for decades], how to properly use pesticides and limit their harmful effects on bees, as well as ways to control the red date wasp and wax worms.

In her presentation, Professor Naglaa Ghazala from ARC reminded the audience that “honey isn’t the only important by-product of bees: they also produce pollen, wax, propolis, royal jelly and a venom which has medical properties.” During her talk, she promoted a shift from chemicals to natural methods to treat diseases that often affect bees, and reduce their life span and productivity. “Swapping chemical pesticides for natural products ensures that both bees and bee keepers remain in an environment that isn’t harmful to their health.”

In fact, chemical spraying of crops, particularly citrus trees that honey bees pollinate during the flowering season, can disorientate bees, increase their death rate, and leave residues in honey. ARC is advocating for the use of essential oils made of thyme, clove and other plants over chemical products to protect hives from diseases.

Another speaker, Professor Mohamed S. Mohamed, warned the audience of the harmful consequences of pesticide spraying for bees. “While pesticides are meant to kill targeted insects, they are also harmful to innocuous ones, including honey bees. Spraying chemical substances can either instantly kill the bee, or have a delayed effect and prove fatal a few days after exposure,” he explained. Neonicotinoids are a class of neuro-active insecticides that are particularly harmful to bees and can cause disorientation. As a result, bees may not be able to find the way back to their hives, and die.

In terms of diseases, Dr. Aida Abd El-Wahed from ARC described the lethal effects of the ‘deformed wings viruses, the most lethal of all which curtails the bees’ ability to fly and feed themselves.

Once the presentations wrapped up, a field visit to Fouad Badran’s apiary for the attending beekeepers took place. ARC experts moved about the various hives, opening their lids up and showcasing how they can make adjustments to the hives, and how to use natural products instead of chemicals. “Staying away from pesticides can increase honey production and honey harvest,” explains Dr. Ghazala, who also pointed at the other bee products’ value, such as royal jelly and pollen.

The day ended with a visit to Fouad Badran’s honey packing factory in Hessa Shabshir. Badran, who is the largest honey producer in the village, led a visit with the participants to the factory and displayed the various machinery in use.

"تدريب النحالين المصريين على المكافحة المتكاملة للآفات وأمراض نحل العسل"

نظم خبراء تربية النحل من مركز البحوث الزراعية (ARC) بالقاهرة وطنطا ندوة عمل لمدة يوم واحد لعشرات النحالين من قرية حصة شبشير بمحافظة الغربية. وتعتبر هذه الفاعلية المنظمة من قبل مركز البحوث الزراعية والمنعقدة في 15 أغسطس 2020 جزءًا من مشروع بريما للاتحاد الأوروبي – PLANT B-والذي يسعى جاهداً لتحسين سبل التوافق والاستدامة بين تربية نحل العسل والنباتات الطبية / العطرية ونظم زراعة أشجار الحمضيات المختلطة في 6 دول متوسطية بما في ذلك مصر.

ويعتبر مركز البحوث الزراعية وهو أحد الشركاء الرئيسيين لمشروع PLANT-B مسؤولا عن نشر أفضل ممارسات المكافحة المتكاملة للآفات لمربي النحل المحليين، مع تطوير الممارسات والآليات المبتكرة الرامية إلى تحسين رفاهية مربي النحل وإنتاج النحل.

وشهدت الفاعلية سلسلة من العروض التقديمية لخبراء تربية النحل بالمركز ((ARC، تبعها تدريب ميداني في منحل قريب، وزيارة إلى مصنع لتعبئة العسل. وقد افتتحت الندوة الدكتورة سعاد عبد اللطيف شعيرة، أستاذ المكافحة الحيوية بمعهد بحوث وقاية النباتات بمركز البحوث الزراعية وهو الجهة المحورية للمشروع في مصر، حيث قدمت بإيجار كل من المتحدثين بالندوة وخصت بالشكر السيد الدكتور محمد سليمان مدير مركز البحوث الزراعية لحضور هذه الفعالية الهامة.

وتضمنت الساعة الأولى من التدريب سلسلة من العروض التقديمية حول أفضل ممارسات المكافحة المتكاملة للآفات، والأساليب النباتية للتعامل مع عُثَّة الفارروا [سوسة دمرت خلايا النحل في جميع أنحاء العالم لعقود من الزمن]، وكيفية استخدام المبيدات بشكل صحيح وآمن والحد من آثارها الضارة على النحل، وكذلك طرق السيطرة على دبور البلح الأحمر وديدان الشمع.

وقد ذكّرت الأستاذة الدكتورة نجلاء غزالة من مركز البحوث الزراعية السادة الحضور في عرضها أن "العسل لا يعد المنتج الثانوي الوحيد الهام للنحل: إذ أن النحل ينتج أيضًا حبوب اللقاح والشمع وصمغ النحل أو البروبوليس وغذاء ملكات النحل وسُمّ النحل ذو الخصائص الطبية". وخلال حديثها، شجعت الدكتورة نجلاء على التحول من المواد الكيميائية إلى الأساليب الطبيعية لعلاج الأمراض التي غالبًا ما تصيب النحل وتقلل عمرة الافتراضي وإنتاجيته قائلة "إن استبدال المبيدات الكيميائية بالمنتجات الطبيعية يضمن بقاء كل من النحل ومربي النحل في بيئة غير ضارة بالصحة.

وفي واقع الأمر، قد يؤدي الرش الكيمائي للمحاصيل، ولاسيما أشجار الحمضيات التي يلقحها النحل خلال موسم الإزهار إلى إرباك النحل، وزيادة معدل وفياته، فضلا عن ترك بقايا الرش بالعسل. ولذا يوصي مركز البحوث الزراعية باستخدام الزيوت الأساسية المصنوعة من الزعتر والقرنفل والنباتات الأخرى بدلا من المنتجات الكيميائية لحماية خلايا النحل من الأمراض.

هذا وقد حذر الأستاذ الدكتور محمد محمد، الحضور من العواقب الضارة لرش النحل بالمبيدات، قائلا “بينما تهدف المبيدات إلى القضاء على الحشرات الضارة، إلا أنها تشكل ضرراً للحشرات الحميدة (غير الضارة)، منها نحل العسل. وأوضح أن رش المواد الكيميائية قد يودي بحياة النحل على الفور أو قد يتأخر تأثيره ويثبت أنه مميت بعد أيام قليلة من الرش.

وأضاف أن مبيدات النيونيكوتينويد هي فئة من المبيدات الحشرية ذات النشاط العصبي الضارة بالنحل بشكل خاص لأنها تؤدي إلى إرباكه فيتعذر عليه إيجاد طريق العودة إلى الخلية ويموت.

وفيما يتعلق بالأمراض، وصفت الدكتورة عايدة عبد الواحد من مركز البحوث الزراعية الآثار المميتة لـ "فيروسات الأجنحة المشوهة"، وهي أكثر الفيروسات فتكًا وتحد من قدرة النحل على الطيران وإطعام نفسه.

وعقب الانتهاء من العروض التقديمية، تم إجراء زيارة ميدانية لمنحل فؤاد بدران لمربي النحل الحاضرين للندوة، حيث تجول خبراء مركز البحوث الزراعية حول خلايا النحل المختلفة، وقاموا بفتح أغطيتها وعرضوا للحضور كيفية إجراء التعديلات على خلايا النحل، وكيفية استخدام المنتجات الطبيعية بدلاً من المواد الكيميائية. وأضحت الدكتورة نجلاء غزالة “أن تجنب استخدام المبيدات الحشرية قد يؤدى إلى زيادة إنتاج العسل وحصاد العسل"، كما أشارت أيضًا إلى أهمية منتجات النحل الأخرى، مثل غذاء ملكات النحل وحبوب اللقاح.

واٍختُتم اليوم بزيارة مصنع فؤاد بدران لتعبئة العسل في قرية حصة شبشير. وقاد السيد بدران، وهو أكبر مُنتٍج للعسل في القرية، الزيارة مع المشاركين إلى المصنع وقام بعرض الآلات المختلفة المستخدمة.
